April Cook Political Report/RT Strategies Polls

The remarkable stability in President Obama's job approval ratings continued in the new Cook Political Report/RT Strategies poll of 833 registered voters conducted April 8-11. In the poll, 60 percent approved, while 30 percent disapproved (margin of error ± 3.4%). Among just Democrats, 90 percent approved, five percent disapproved, among Republicans, 30 percent approved, 59 percent disapproved. Independents split with 55 percent approving, 30 percent disapproving.

On the generic Congressional ballot test, Democrats posted an 11-point lead, 49 to 38 percent, a bit wider than in several other polls over the last two months that showed a smaller Democratic lead, dead even in one, low-to-mid single digits in most others. Democrats held 93 percent of their vote, Republicans retained 92 percent of theirs, and Independents favored Democrats 42 to 30 percent.

In a hypothetical 2012 presidential general election match-up, 50 percent said that they would definitely or probably vote for Barack Obama again (32 percent definitely, 18 percent probably) while 39 percent indicated that they would definitely or probably vote against him (26 percent definitely, 13 percent probably).

When given the choice of choosing between the statements "we need to have a Democratic Congress in order to help President Obama enact his legislative program," and the other "We need to elect a Republican Congress to act as a check and balance, to keep Democrats from going too far," 48 percent chose the Republican 'check and balance' option, 41 percent indicated a preference for Democratic Congress to work with Obama.

At the same time though, when asked if "President Obama is just more of the same Democratic polcies," or if "President Obama is bringing the right kind of change to Washington," by 56 to 35 percent, voters sided with Obama bringing the right kind of change to Washington.

Other questions on the survey tested attitudes towards President Obama personally, towards his policies, and public support for future Federal intervention to help troubled financial institutions.
