The Cook Political Report "Big Data At-A-Glance"

President Obama’s analytics-driven victory in 2012 generated enough bragging rights to power the launch of at least eight new Democratic consulting firms that leverage Big Data and wonk up the ranks of three national advocacy campaigns. On the Republican side, the fallout also has inspired several new consultancies as well as some serious reconfiguring among the party’s data set.

A few Obama analysts have become political celebrities in the way winning media consultants used to, minus the glib quips and Sunday-show appearances. But the rest of these folks remain relatively unknown, at least for now. Which is why we’re introducing our “Big Data At-A-Glance,” a directory of who’s who and who’s where in the fast-reorganizing, quickly capitalizing world of political Big Data. We asked the experts themselves who they’d include, and while the result focuses on senior talent, it also names some up-and-comers.

The latest Democratic firm on the scene is BlueLabs. Formed by Chris Wegrzyn, Elan Kriegel and other senior Obama analytics alumni, it boasts the heads of predictive modeling, analytics technology, polling and battleground states analytics from the campaign’s storied “Cave.” Obama Chief Analytics Officer Dan Wagner himself recently launched Civis Analytics. The campaign’s senior paid-media crew has launched the Analytics Media Group (AMG). Other Obama data rock stars have signed onto existing firms such as Blue State Digital or returned to their former employers—again, such as Blue State Digital (BSD).

To overlook all the activity among these strategists’ Republican counterparts would be unwise. Those who learn the hard lessons that come with losing tend to be more motivated to innovate for the next cycle. Much of Democrats’ data-driven infrastructure in place today, including best-practices resource The Analyst Institute and hubs like Catalist and The Atlas Project, sprang from their 2004 loss to President George W. Bush. Amid the drama over the fate of the GOP’s voter files, green shoots—or should we say, deep roots—hint at similar innovations to come.

The newly formed Deep Root Analytics brings together some of the party’s savviest thinkers about media targeting, including Romney 2012 analytics chief Alex Lundry, the leadership of Lundry’s firm TargetPoint Consulting, and Bush 2004 top targeter Sara Taylor Fagen. More established firms like Blaise Hazelwood’s Grassroots Targeting and scrappy outfits like Ned Ryun’s Voter Gravity and the just renamed Vlytics, now called 0ptimus, also seek to steep GOP campaigns in data-driven decision-making.

We’ve also included the resources themselves—not just Democrats’ more established clearinghouses but the elbow-bumping ventures on the GOP side.

Like all Cook Political Report At-A-Glance charts, this one will be continually updated. And like all such lists, it comes with a couple of caveats:

First, while both parties can claim talented digital consultants, we’ve tried to avoid conflating digital with data by drawing a line at the senior digital strategists who are fluent in both, such as Obama 2012 digital director Teddy Goff, partner in the new strategic communications venture Precision, along with Goff’s senior team who have now dispersed to the White House, to AMG, to BSD, or in Obama digital analytics director Amelia Showalter’s case, to her new LLC. Recent presidential campaign digital directors also make the Republican list.

Second and last, we’ve done our best to cover the current universe of Big Data talent, but no doubt we’ve overlooked someone or some firm. Thank you in advance for your polite emails.
