Alabama may be in the throes of a major cultural fight over State Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore's refusal to abide by a federal court's ruling legalizing same sex marriage. But it's not a state that's going to host a competitive congressional election next November. In fact, the only district worth watching at this point might be the Montgomery area 2nd CD, where GOP Rep. Martha Roby could get a significant primary challenge. In 2010, Republicans won back the state legislature for the first time in 136 years, granting them exclusive power to redistrict. So in 2011, Republicans simply unraveled Democrats' old map, moving even more black precincts back into the African-American packed 7th District. Even though a second African-American majority district would have been possible, the Obama Justice Department didn't object to just one. Republicans have locked Democrats out of six of the state's seven seats for the foreseeable future.
