This story was originally published on nationaljournal.com on November 1, 2016 Ever since the news broke on Fri­day that new emails had emerged that could per­tain to the in­vest­ig­a­tion of Hil­lary Clin­ton’s private serv­er, the ques­tion on pretty much every­one’s mind has been how it would af­fect the out­come of the pres­id­en­tial race. Ob­vi­ously most Re­pub­lic­ans and crit­ics of Hil­lary Clin­ton des­per­ately hope that this is a game-chan­ging de­vel­op­ment in a race that already has shown signs of tight­en­ing. Con­versely, Demo­crats and Clin­ton sup­port­ers fer­vently hope that it will turn in­to a noth­ing-bur­ger, both sub­stant­ively and polit­ic­ally. But it is far too soon to know wheth­er this new de­vel­op­ment will move pub­lic opin­ion in any way. For what it’s worth, my hunch is that this is too little too late for Don­ald Trump. The jury had de­lib­er­ated at length and was fil­ing in­to the courtroom to de­liv­er its ver­dict when the news broke. To ex­tend the meta­phor to early vot­ing, some jur­ors had already handed the judge their little piece of pa­per with their de­cision. Trump had the right idea
