While it is still early in the year, all signs continue to point to a booming 2021-2022 political cycle. Since the beginning of Q2, spending is up 60% over the same period in 2019 and is only increasing in pace. The largest activity has been centered around the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. Approximately a month away from the primary, nearly $20M has been spent on advertising, with most of the contenders now on air. The Republican primary for Virginia Governor concluded with $5.4M in spending, while the Democratic primary continues with Terry McAuliffe holding a $3M edge. In Florida and Texas, we have seen the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Las Vegas Sands spend millions on ads promoting their respective gambling interests. These three areas have seen some of the most heated political action and look likely to be the epicenters of spending in the coming weeks.
