Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions had to break a sweat to win this seat in 1996, getting 52 percent. His re-election bid in 2002 was considerably easier and he won with 59 percent. It appears that he could better that performance this year.

The Democratic nominee is state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures, who won the June 3 primary with 64 percent of the vote against two perennial candidates. As of June 30, she had raised $242,000 for the cycle, spent $224,000 and had just $14,620 in the bank. By contrast, Sessions finished the second quarter with $4.3 million cash on hand.

While it’s no surprise that not a single poll has been released in this race, it does provide some indication of how solid Sessions’ prospects are.
