RACE ANALYSIS

The Bottom Line

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

Longtime moderate GOP Rep. Pete King quickly endorsed Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino after announcing his retirement last November. But Republicans are alarmed that Garbarino has barely raised money: by the end of June, Democratic Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon had outraised him $1.6 million to $439,000, and now Gordon and the DCCC have the New York airwaves to themselves.

Democrats are taking a tried-and-true approach of pummeling Garbarino as an "Albany politician" in the pocket of drug and insurance companies. The 2nd CD is known as a bedroom for firefighters and law enforcement and voted for Trump 53 percent to 44 percent in 2016, but it voted for Obama in the past. The Jamaican-born Gordon, a former guidance counselor and Army police officer, has a genuine chance to steal this open seat.
