The Democratic Senatorial primary is likely to pit Cong. Richard Shelby against Secretary of State Don Siegelman and James Allen, Jr., the son of Senators James andMaryon Allen. The primary winner will take on the uphill but not impossible task of defeating Sen. Jeremiah Denton. Denton has focused his attention more on the state in recent months than on the broad array of social and foreign policy issues that dominated his agenda during the first four years of his term. Because of Denton's unique background as a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and Vietnam prisoner of war, it is difficult to gauge his political strength by conventional job ratings and campaign organization.
