Democratic Rep. Jim Moran's retirement from the 8th CD has generated a huge field of candidates vying for the shortest commute to Washington in the June 10 primary, but auto dealer and former Lt. Gov. Don Beyer is the frontrunner. And in retiring GOP Rep. Frank Wolf's open 10th CD, the nominations are already settled: GOP Del. Barbara Comstock is the narrow favorite over Democratic Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust.

VA-01: Rob Wittman (R) - East: Fredericksburg, Williamsburg, Northern Neck Solid Republican. An even-keeled former shellfish sanitation worker, Wittman has proven highly popular in this Chesapeake Bay area district and may have future statewide potential. In 2010, he beat Democrat Krystal Ball: 64 percent to 35 percent. But it's hard to tell who got the better end of the deal: Wittman still has to put up with Congress, while Ball earned an MSNBC contract and co-hosts "The Cycle."

In 2012 redistricting, Republicans moved the rural 1st CD north to absorb more of high-growth Prince William County in Northern Virginia; now, one out of every five voters in the district lives there.
