House Editor David Wasserman writes: Ten years ago, Connecticut's 5th CD was the scene of considerable drama when GOP Rep. Nancy Johnson and Democratic Rep. Jim Maloney were forced to run against each other thanks to redistricting. Johnson won that race, but lost to then-state Sen. Chris Murphy in the Democratic wave of 2006. This year, redistricting isn't to blame for the heated race in the northwestern corner of the state. To the GOP's chagrin, a court-appointed special master barely altered the lines. Rather, Murphy's run for Senate has set off a free-for-all featuring three credible Democrats and five serious Republicans.

New District Baselines

CT-01: John Larson (D) – Central: Hartford

Solid Democratic. Larson's 61 percent in 2010 was the lowest in his career since his first election in 1998, but the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House has this Hartford seat for life. Redistricting barely changed the lines.
