In Georgia's 4th district, Democrat Cynthia McKinney is locked in her third consecutive battle to win the Democratic nomination in this heavily Democratic, Atlanta-centered district. She faces former DeKalb County Commissioner Hank Johnson in an August 8 run-off.

No stranger to controversy, McKinney's outspokenness has helped make her an inviting target. In 2002, McKinney was crushed in the Democratic primary by former state court judge and political neophyte Denise Majette in what was a nationally targeted contest. Two years later, Majette left the House for an ultimately unsuccessful run for the Senate. A field of Democratic heavyweights, including a former DeKalb County CEO and the former Atlanta City Council President joined McKinney in the Democratic primary to replace Majette. While McKinney detractors crowed that the former Rep. was far too burdened by political baggage to make it through a crowded primary without being forced into a run-off, McKinney, who kept a low-profile though out the contest, won the primary outright with 51 percent of vote.

This year, McKinney once again commanded the controversy spotlight when she got into a scuffle
