House Editor David Wasserman writes: In 2002, Utah Republicans sought to defeat then-freshman Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson by stretching the 2nd CD from Salt Lake City all the way to the prohibitively Republican southwestern corner of the state. And for five election cycles in a row, Matheson cheated defeat. This round of redistricting, Republicans are trying a slightly different approach to achieve an all-GOP delegation: instead of making his seat even more conservative, they split his seat four ways to force him to win over unfamiliar voters. But the real threat to Matheson, one of the last surviving Blue Dogs, may not be a district that's two-thirds new. It may be a female, Mormon, African-American, small town mayor who has already generated more buzz than any House hopeful in the country.
