Maryland wasn’t anywhere near the list of competitive contests until former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan pulled off a legitimate political surprise in February and filed to run in this open seat contest. Until that moment, it looked like whichever Democrat emerged from the primary — wealthy Rep. David Trone (MD-06), or Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks — would be the clear favorite to succeed the retiring Sen. Ben Cardin.
But now the Old Line State race has gotten far more complex. There is just under a month left until the May 14 primary, and so far Trone has poured in nearly $42 million of his own money in his quest for the Senate seat. The Total Wine & More founder has run optimistic ads — bringing him to a total of nearly $29 million on air reserved through the primary — touting how he’s a self-made businessman who grew up on a farm, and has emphasized his work on drug addiction, mental health and protecting abortion rights, even noting his charitable foundation opened a clinic in western Maryland.
